Having been born with cerebral palsy and epilepsy, I was steered at a young age to cross-stitch as a means to improve fine motor skills in my right hand and to provide a means of self-expression. Attuned as I was by my epilepsy and cerebral palsy to envision the world in terms of challenges to be mastered, I quickly recognized that my chosen form of art offered me a rare chance at individualism and an opportunity to reinvigorate an art form that had advanced little from the images invoked by mass-produced kits and the likes of 18th and 19th century samplers.
